A management financial report should state scope, period, and metric definitions before showing results, comparisons, and limitations.

Management financial report contents

  • Scope: included company, branch, and data.
  • Reporting period and report date.
  • Metric definitions and data source.
  • Revenue, margins, expenses, profit, and cash flow where available.
  • Comparison with a prior period or forecast, with the basis stated.
  • Exceptions, missing data, and open questions.

How should results be presented?

Show the current figure, comparison, absolute or relative movement, and lines that deserve investigation. Do not present a variance as a proven cause or conflate a forecast with a budget or target.
